The following is the transcript of the interview with Dr. Xing Xinli, Chairman of Worldway Group, at the 2018 China-Europe Trade and Investment Forum by Sina
Host: Hello, Sina netizens! I am a reporter from Sina. Today, I am honored to interview Dr. Xing Xinli, Chairman of Worldway Group. Hello, Dr. Xing! As the organizer of the 2018 China-Europe Trade and Investment Forum, could you please share the original intention behind your participation in planning and organizing this large-scale conference?
Dr. Xing Xinli: Our goal was to draw the attention of Chinese investors to Europe. After experiencing a decade of crisis, Europe is now emerging from it. This can be seen from four indicators: first, in terms of economic growth rate, GDP growth in 2017 reached its best level in a decade. Regarding the unemployment rate, the Eurozone and the EU have seen unemployment drop below 9%, creating a ten-year low.
Dr. Xing Xinli: Looking at the European inflation rate, it has been hovering at a low value of 1.3%-1.5%. Furthermore, in terms of public finance performance, a gratifying phenomenon has emerged in the Eurozone: both government debt ratios and deficit ratios are declining. Therefore, from these four aspects, we can see that the European economy is emerging from the crisis and beginning a strong recovery. This is a very good opportunity for Chinese investors to enter Europe. The purpose and original intention of holding this forum were to encourage Chinese investors to pay attention to European investment. At the same time, we invited officials from the embassies and consulates of several European countries in China to introduce their respective investment policies, enabling Chinese investors to better understand Europe and facilitate informed choices regarding their investments or asset allocation.
Host: Dr. Xing, from the perspective of the current global economic environment, are you optimistic about the arrival of a golden decade for European investment?
Dr. Xing Xinli: We are optimistic, which is why I spoke about "Welcoming the Dawn of Europe" during my keynote speech at this forum. We believe that after ten years of hardship, a decade of brilliance is bound to follow. The European economy is emerging from a ten-year low, and the dawn of Europe has appeared. Based on various indicators of European development, we believe that the next decade for the European economy will be a brilliant one. Of course, brilliance does not mean everything will be smooth sailing, and the crisis has not been completely eliminated. While the economy is growing, certain crises still exist behind it, so future development will not be entirely smooth. However, on the whole, the dawn of sustained economic growth in Europe has appeared. Therefore, at this meeting, I proposed that the next decade will be Europe's golden decade. Chinese investors should seize this opportunity; now is a very good time to invest in Europe.
Host: With the development of economic globalization, the Chinese economy is integrating into the world economy at an increasingly rapid pace. Could you share the ways in which Chinese capital enters Europe? In particular, through what channels can individual investors quickly enter Europe?
Dr. Xing Xinli: Because China has followed a unique path of reform and opening up, Chinese capital entering Europe also has its own unique characteristics. There are two ways to enter Europe. One is through corporate investment, which is the mainstream or dominant way for Chinese capital to enter Europe. Between 2000 and 2016, China's investment in Europe reached 101.3 billion euros, with the most significant portion coming from corporate investment. Corporate investment often manifests as M&A-style investment or centralized investment, and this trend will continue to develop.
Dr. Xing Xinli: The other way is individual investment, where the capital owner is a natural person. This type of investment has become increasingly active in recent years and has become an important way for Chinese capital to enter Europe. The characteristics of individual investment are small-scale and decentralized, and individual will plays an important role in investment choices. However, individual investment features a simple investment structure and rapid decision-making, and it also offers greater flexibility in investment strategy. Therefore, it has higher efficiency and is more easily accepted by some European countries. We believe that with the acceleration of China's reform and opening up, individual investment will account for an increasingly important share of China's capital investment.
Host: Dr. Xing, if we look at European development opportunities from a strategic and long-term perspective, could you share which European countries you are optimistic about? What are the reasons?
Dr. Xing Xinli: Europe is composed of many countries. These countries have commonalities, but their cultures, laws, and languages are different, and different investors may have different choices. As individual investors, they often consider a very important issue: visa barriers and residency rights barriers. Therefore, individual investment often starts with investment immigration. Consequently, countries with relatively favorable investment immigration policies will attract more individual investors. Examples include Greece, Cyprus, Malta, Portugal, and Spain. Especially in the last two years, due to the high cost-effectiveness of investment in Greece, it has attracted more investors.
Dr. Xing Xinli: However, in 2018, a new trend emerged in this type of investment immigration. In the past, it was often limited to the EU area. In 2018, a new trend will emerge where investment immigration moves beyond EU countries and enters non-EU European countries. For example, European countries in the Balkan region and those near the Black Sea region will become new investment hotspots for Chinese investors. Therefore, I also hope that Chinese individual investors will pay attention to these investment regions. Thank you all!
Host: Alright, today's interview ends here. Thank you very much, Dr. Xing, for your wonderful sharing, and thank you to all the netizens for watching. Thank you!
Dr. Xing Xinli: Thank you, host, and thank you to all the netizens!
