We are currently in the peak summer travel season, which is also a period of high travel risk, making travel safety a matter of widespread concern. As one of the most popular travel destinations, the United States will certainly see many Chinese parents traveling with their children during the summer vacation. Chinese citizens in the U.S., especially the student population, have also entered a peak period for travel.

When traveling abroad, safety comes first! The Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the United States reminds everyone to pay attention to certain matters. The editors at Worldway Immigration Group have summarized them as follows:

Summer Travel to the U.S.: Important Precautions to Keep in Mind

1. Please closely monitor U.S. climate news and weather forecasts and take necessary precautions. In the event of a sudden natural disaster, follow the instructions of local rescue authorities.

2. Avoid traveling alone at night while in the U.S. If you encounter danger, remain calm and dial 911 to call the police.

3. Minors under the age of 18 should be accompanied by both parents when entering or leaving the United States. If accompanied by only one parent, a written authorization letter from the other parent is required. If traveling with other relatives such as grandparents, siblings, or friends, or as part of a tour group, a written authorization letter from both parents is required. U.S. border enforcement authorities do not always request to inspect this authorization letter, but if they do, it must be presented. The U.S. government does not provide a template for this authorization letter, but it is suggested that it include the following information: names of travelers, purpose, dates, locations, contact information for the absent parent(s), etc. It is recommended that the letter be written in English and notarized.

4. It is recommended to keep copies of your passport information page and visa page. If your passport is lost, please report it to the police immediately. Generally, you can board domestic flights in the U.S. using copies of your passport and visa along with the police report. At the same time, please proceed to the nearest embassy or consulate as soon as possible to apply for replacement travel documents.

5. To further ensure the safety of passengers and airports, the United States has successively introduced or strictly enforced airport security measures. Please pay attention to relevant news and respect the instructions of law enforcement and staff on-site.

6. U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers have the authority to inspect all individuals entering the country (including U.S. citizens), including their nationality, purpose of entry, and carried items, such as luggage, electronic devices, and vehicles. The inspection authority of U.S. border enforcement is not subject to the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and does not require a prior search warrant. Non-U.S. citizens applying for entry do not have the right to meet with an attorney or representative during an entry inspection, unless the applicant is facing criminal investigation and is in custody. Generally, the legitimate rights and interests enjoyed by the party on-site are limited to filing complaints, requesting translation assistance, and refusing to sign documents. If you believe that law enforcement officers have engaged in improper conduct or discriminatory practices, please properly preserve relevant evidence and you may request to file a complaint with their supervisor on the spot. If law enforcement officers initiate an investigation into the individual for suspected criminal offenses during the entry inspection, the individual may, in principle, immediately request to hire an attorney. If customs officers have doubts about the traveler's purpose of entry or documents, the traveler will need to go to a secondary inspection area for further examination and questioning. It should be noted that holding a valid U.S. visa does not guarantee your right to enter the United States; CBP officers have the final decision on whether to grant you entry. Engaging in legal arguments with on-site law enforcement officers is not helpful for resolving entry issues and may even worsen the situation. It is recommended that you answer the officers' questions objectively and rationally.

7. Medical expenses in the United States are expensive; you should purchase medical and personal accident insurance based on your own health and financial situation.

8. Recently, telecommunications fraud targeting Chinese citizens has been rampant globally. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and relevant embassies and consulates have issued multiple reminders and response guides. We would like to reiterate that Chinese embassies and consulates abroad and domestic government agencies will not notify Chinese compatriots by phone that they are involved in cases in China that need to be handled, will not proactively notify you that your passport or documents have expired and need to be extended or replaced, and will certainly not ask for personal financial information such as bank cards, nor will they request transfers or remittances. If you receive a call from a stranger claiming a "traffic accident" or "kidnapping of a child," please remain calm and verify the situation through other channels before taking any action. If you are unfortunately deceived, you should report it to the local U.S. police immediately and also report it to the public security organs in China. If the victim cannot report directly to the domestic public security organs, they can have a close relative in China report it on their behalf and request assistance from the local Anti-Telecommunications Network Fraud Center (by dialing 110).

In case of an emergency, you can dial the U.S. emergency number: 911 (Chinese language service is available).

For consular assistance, please call the consular protection hotline of the Chinese Embassy or Consulate in the U.S. Embassy in the U.S.: 202-4952216; Consulate General in New York: 212-6953125; Consulate General in San Francisco: 415-2168525; Consulate General in Los Angeles: 213-8078052; Consulate General in Chicago: 312-7800170; Consulate General in Houston: 713-5219215.

Please keep the above precautions in mind. The editors at Worldway Immigration Group wish you a pleasant and safe journey.
