Worldway Immigration Group has learned that the Portuguese SEF has recently updated the Nationality Act regarding the Golden Residence Permit, and the new act officially came into effect on July 6. The new act mainly introduces changes to the naturalization process. The detailed changes are as follows:
1. Individuals born in Portugal to foreign parents shall become Portuguese citizens if one of the parents has been legally residing in Portugal for at least 2 years, provided the following requirements are met:
The parents were not residing in Portugal in the service of their home government (e.g., as diplomats);
The applicant has not declared that they do not wish to become Portuguese.
2. Naturalization
Legal residence in Portugal for at least 5 years (previously 6 years);
Children of foreigners born in Portugal, as minors, provided they meet the requirements (proficiency in the Portuguese language and no criminal record) and satisfy one of the following conditions:
One of the parents has resided in Portugal for at least 5 years, regardless of their status, prior to the nationality application;
The minor has completed at least one cycle of education in Portugal (a cycle of primary education or the secondary education stage).
Individuals who cumulatively meet the following requirements:
Born in Portuguese territory;
The foreign parents were residing in the country at the time of birth, regardless of their status;
Has resided in Portugal for at least 5 years, regardless of status.
Individuals born in Portugal whose one parent is a Portuguese citizen may declare themselves Portuguese citizens if the other parent has resided in Portugal for at least five years prior to the application, regardless of status, and was already a Portuguese citizen at the time of the son/daughter's birth.
3. Applicants who are citizens of Portuguese-speaking countries shall be presumed to possess the cognitive ability of the Portuguese language.
4. When parents who are legally married or in a de facto union possess Portuguese nationality and have common children, there is no need to provide proof of connection to the Portuguese community.
To attract more foreign investors, the Portuguese authorities are constantly optimizing and reforming. This change to the act by the Portuguese SEF significantly lowers the naturalization requirements for newborns and minors born to foreigners in Portugal, and reduces the residency requirement for adult naturalization from 6 years to 5 years. This makes naturalization more standardized and simplified, which is undoubtedly a huge boon for investors!
Today, with the recovery of the European economy, more and more investors are setting their sights on European countries. Among them, Portugal has become one of the preferred investment destinations for high-net-worth individuals due to its sound economic growth, favorable business environment, and relaxed immigration policies. Investors only need to purchase real estate or agricultural land worth over 500,000 euros in Portugal to obtain the Portuguese Golden Residence status for the whole family in one go, enjoying the generous benefits of EU countries—a move that serves multiple purposes.
