As the saying goes, familiarity with transport is the key to smooth travel. What are the available transportation options for living in Malta? Today, the Worldway team will show you how to navigate Malta with ease:
Buses
Buses in Malta are divided into two types: small yellow buses and large buses. Additionally, there are sightseeing buses that pass by many of Malta's famous attractions, making your travel more convenient.
Below is an overview of bus ticket types: single journey, weekly, daily, and personalized tickets.
A. Single Journey Ticket
Costs are €1.50 in winter and €2.00 in summer. The summer season runs from mid-June to mid-October. Night service tickets cost €3.00.
Single journey tickets can be purchased directly from the driver upon boarding, and the driver will provide change. Tickets are valid for reuse within 2 hours.
Tickets in Valletta are printed with the time of purchase, and you will need to calculate the expiry time yourself; whereas tickets on the island of Gozo are printed with the expiry time.
B. Weekly Ticket:
€21 for adults and €15 for children (under 10 years old). It covers all transportation on the main island and Gozo, including day/night services, and can be purchased at ticket offices. Validity starts from the first time you tap the card, lasting for 7 consecutive days (7x24 hours). For example, if you activate it at 9:00 AM on the first day, it can be used until 9:00 AM on the eighth day.
C. Daily Ticket:
12 trips for €15, valid for multiple passengers.
D. Personalized Ticket
Personalized tickets must be registered in advance on the official website: https://www.publictransport.com.mt/tallinja-card
There is a €5 registration fee, a separate charge for postage, and a minimum top-up of €20 to activate the card.
Taxis
Taxis in Malta are similar to those in other European countries; hotels and the airport provide taxi services. Some taxis in Malta do not use meters, so you should agree on the price with the driver before getting in. The starting fare is usually around €10.
Ferries
Malta Island – Gozo Ferry
Departing from Cirkewwa terminal and arriving at Mgarr, the trip takes 15 minutes. You do not need to buy a ticket for the outbound journey, but you must buy one for the return journey, which costs €4.65 per person. Ferries run every 45 minutes throughout the day. While service is available all day, intervals are longer after 9:00 PM. After 6:00 AM, there is a ferry every 30 or 45 minutes.
Valletta – Three Cities Ferry
One-way is €1.50, and a round trip is €2.80; the journey takes about 5 minutes.
Sliema – Valletta Ferry
One-way is €1.50, and a round trip is €2.80; the journey takes just a few minutes.
Driving
In Malta, you can also rent a car for a self-drive tour. International driving permits are accepted. Chinese citizens can use their domestic driver's licenses with a valid translation for up to 3 months; for stays longer than three months, you must apply to the Malta Transport Authority to exchange it for a local driving license. Worldway immigration experts advise: Malta follows the Commonwealth system of right-hand drive and left-side traffic. With narrow and steep roads, those choosing to drive should ensure they prioritize safety.
Now that you know these transportation options, do you feel more confident about life in Malta?
