Since last year, the self-service customs clearance system (Primary Inspection Kiosks, abbreviated as PIK) has been implemented at international airports such as Vancouver (YVR), but it is only available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Recently, all travelers arriving at Vancouver Airport from abroad (including travelers from China) have begun to use the self-service customs clearance system for declaration upon entry. The benefit of this system is that it significantly reduces the waiting time for customs clearance.
So how does the self-service customs clearance system operate? The editor of WorldWay Immigration will guide you step by step:
1. Download the APP
Before using the self-service customs clearance system, you need to download the mobile APP: CanBorder - eDeclaration, and fill out the electronic entry application in advance (the APP supports three versions: iOS, Android, and BlackBerry, with the iPhone used as an example).
Tip: If you cannot download this APP, it is also possible to fill it out on-site at the airport's self-service customs clearance machine. However, it is more convenient to fill it out in advance~
2. Fill in the Information
1. Open the APP and select the language - English.
2. Three options will appear; let’s click the first one!
Select "My Declaration" to fill out an electronic customs declaration form online, which is similar to the paper version: travel purpose, items carried, residence information, etc.
First, a bunch of terms will appear,

Fill in your nickname and identity.
3. Select travel information.
4. Select travel purpose.
5. Declare information.
After that, there will be 6 questions, select "No" for all! (Unless you are really carrying those items, it will be more troublesome to pass customs)

6. Review your information.
7. Click "Create QR Code", a bunch of terms will appear. Scroll to the bottom and click "Confirm" to obtain the QR code!
Important Tips:
1. Note that this QR code is only valid for 24 hours; if it expires, you will need to fill it out again.
2. To avoid confusion, it is recommended to fill this out while waiting at the departure airport. It can be filled out in advance for clients who are not proficient in English.
3. This program can also be used in flight mode on your phone, so it can be filled out without internet access.
3. Scan for Entry
1. After disembarking at Vancouver International Airport, find the self-service customs clearance machine.
2. Scan the QR code you just filled out on your phone and your passport. Confirm the completed electronic customs declaration, and perform facial recognition to check if your face matches the passport photo. It uses multi-point recognition, which is highly accurate. To be safe, it is recommended not to wear heavy makeup.
3. After confirming your identity, the machine will print out a receipt-like document, which you can present to the staff to enter the country. If there are no special issues, it will be stamped quickly. The self-service customs clearance system effectively replaces the face-to-face communication process with customs officers, greatly saving time. However, this system only saves communication time; all entrants still need to meet with border officials.
Previously, residents holding Canadian passports and Permanent Resident Cards could use the fast track for entry, but for travelers holding passports from other countries, the "most dreaded" situation is queuing at airport customs.
