It has been half a year since the super hurricanes Maria and Irma struck the Caribbean region last September. How is the post-disaster reconstruction work progressing in Caribbean island nations like Dominica that were devastated by the hurricanes?
It is understood that with the assistance of various countries and international organizations, and under the strong leadership of the government headed by our good friend at WorldWay, the Prime Minister of Dominica, Hon. Roosevelt Skerrit, the people of Dominica have united to carry out post-disaster reconstruction in an orderly manner. Currently, electricity supply in Dominica has been restored to over 23%, and other post-disaster repairs, such as water supply and housing construction, are also proceeding in an orderly fashion. At the end of January, Dominica welcomed the first cruise ship to visit the island since the hurricane, the MV MEIN SCHIFF. The Minister of Tourism of Dominica stated that this was a hard-won achievement.
Recently, the UK government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting and actively working toward helping Dominica rebuild a better home after the hurricane. The UK has allocated £50.7 million for key infrastructure projects in Dominica, including a new £250,000 grant for the repair of Dominica's water systems, a project implemented by the Caribbean Development Bank through the UK Caribbean Infrastructure Fund.
Janet Douglas, the British High Commissioner to Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, stated that the UK will help Dominica become the world's first nation to effectively manage natural disasters and achieve post-disaster resilience.
To address the impact of the hurricanes and provide financial support for the rapid recovery of the local economy, the government of Dominica previously launched a new investment immigration policy, lowering the threshold for Dominica's investment immigration. This not only reduced costs but also significantly relaxed age restrictions for dependents. Regarding dependents, the new policy extended the age limit for economically dependent adult children in school from 18-28 to 18-30 years old; for unmarried, economically dependent adult daughters, the age limit was extended from 28 to 30 years old; and for parents or grandparents over 55, the age requirement for their spouses was lowered, allowing those under 55 to accompany them. This new policy is valid for only six months, ending on March 31, 2018.
The countdown to the end of this new policy has begun. Investors who are interested in obtaining a Dominica passport and whose children, parents, or grandparents were previously restricted by the old regulations are advised to seize the time to submit their applications.
