According to a report by Xinhua on February 24, the international credit rating agency Moody's has maintained Malta's sovereign credit rating at A3, while upgrading its rating outlook from stable to positive. This is the first time Moody's has raised Malta's rating outlook since October 2013.
Moody's stated that the upgrade of Malta's rating outlook reflects two key factors: first, the strengthening of Malta's fiscal strength, and second, stable economic growth that contributes to further improvement in Malta's fiscal indicators. Moody's expects that from 2016 to 2019, Malta's government debt-to-GDP ratio will decrease by approximately 10 percentage points. By 2019, the government debt as a percentage of GDP is expected to be around 47%, with potential for further decline in the future.
Malta's social stability, developed economy, and an A-rated sovereign debt rating; convenient communication in English, adherence to the British education system, low education costs, and high national education levels; a non-global taxation country; and excellent healthcare services are among the highlights attracting significant attention from many individuals.
Globally Unique "Four-in-One" Country
As the "Heart of the Mediterranean," Malta is the only country in the world that is a "Four-in-One" nation: a Schengen country, an EU member state, a Eurozone country, and a member of the Commonwealth. This makes Malta a "diplomatic intermediary" in Europe and the Mediterranean, allowing investors to conveniently invest in Europe and arrange global asset allocations.
Rising Global Competitiveness Ranking, Enhanced Economic Status
The "World Economic Forum," known for the Davos meeting, released the "2017-2018 Global Competitiveness Report" on September 26, 2017, ranking the competitiveness of 137 countries and regions. In this ranking, Switzerland retained the top position, while Malta rose three places! This indicates that Malta has maintained considerable advantages and competitiveness in the global economic environment, placing it in a very attractive economic position.
Rapid Economic Growth
In 2017, Malta's GDP grew by 6.3% for the entire year, with the actual GDP growth in the first half reaching 5.5%, ranking first in the EU. Furthermore, the unemployment rate hit a new low of only 3.5%. On November 18, 2017, Malta was rated by the International Monetary Fund as one of the strongest growing economies in Europe, with income exceeding the EU average. Stable employment has led to a decrease in the unemployment rate to historically low levels, and it is expected that Malta will continue to maintain strong growth momentum in the coming years.
