Federal health officials report that the flu outbreak in the United States is severe, with 10 children recently dying from flu infections, bringing the total number of flu-related child deaths to 63, and the total number of cases continues to rise.
The current flu situation is almost as severe as the H1N1 pandemic in 2009, and this year's flu season is longer than any winter flu season since 2003.
A government report indicates that last week, 1 in every 13 patients visiting healthcare facilities showed symptoms of fever, cough, and other flu-related symptoms.
According to Anne Schuchat, the acting director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): "I hope there will be good news this week, but almost everything we see is bad news."
The latest update from the CDC shows that during the week ending February 3, the flu spread to 48 states, with 43 states experiencing severe outbreaks.
Based on visitation data, an average of 60 out of every 100,000 people has been infected with the flu, which is higher than the previous week's rate of 51 per 100,000 and also above the approximately 44 per 100,000 during the severe flu season of 2014-2015.
The flu season typically begins in late December of the previous year and peaks around February. This year's flu season started early, becoming widespread in many states by December. Early last month, it appeared to have reached peak levels, but then continued to surge.
In such severe flu seasons, the CDC estimates that up to 56,000 people die from flu-related complications, the majority of whom are older adults. The agency does not have a precise count of adult deaths but closely monitors child mortality as a measure of flu season severity.
