On the evening of January 30, local time, U.S. President Trump delivered his first State of the Union address before a joint session of Congress, themed "Building a Safe, Strong, and Proud America."

Trump stated that it is the duty of himself and every elected official to defend Americans. He invited Democrats and Republicans to work together to protect American citizens, regardless of their background, color, or creed.
In his speech, Trump proposed a four-point immigration plan. He stated that his immigration policy will serve the best interests of American workers and American families, and that the immigrant community will also benefit.
First, provide a path to citizenship for 1.8 million illegal immigrants brought to the U.S. as children;
Second, fully secure our borders—including building a wall on the southern border and hiring more valiant agents to protect our national security;
Third, end the visa lottery. This is a program that randomly hands out green cards without any regard for skill, merit, or the safety of the American people;
Fourth, end "chain" migration to protect the nuclear family. He stated that under the current system, a single immigrant can bring in virtually unlimited numbers of distant relatives, whereas the focus will now be on immediate family members.
Trump said: "My duty, and the sacred duty, of every elected official in this chamber, is to defend Americans—to protect their safety, their families, their communities, and their right to the American Dream. Because when everyone knows who is coming in and coming out, all of our citizens are safer." (Note: Original text implied a fair compromise, noting that no one gets everything they want on immigration, and that Congress will soon approve a new immigration bill.)
Trump also emphasized that the core principle of the new immigration law is "America First." The U.S. will provide childcare subsidies for dual-income families, and immigration policies will protect American citizens and families, which in turn will benefit the immigrant population.
