Officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stated that this year's flu season is the most severe in 15 years, with approximately 12,000 hospitalizations and at least 37 pediatric deaths reported to date.
CDC officials indicated that by the end of this flu season, approximately 34 million Americans will have contracted the flu, meaning one in every ten Americans will be infected.
Dr. Jernigan, Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC, stated that this viral strain has two characteristics: first, it is affecting almost all states simultaneously; second, flu activity has remained consistently high across the country for three consecutive weeks. While different regions typically peak at different times, this year has seen a large number of cases appearing simultaneously.
The flu season usually peaks in February, but this year it arrived early, beginning last December. CDC officials stated that the number of pediatric deaths this season will likely meet or exceed the 148 deaths recorded during the 2014-2015 flu season.
The CDC has not released the total number of deaths caused by the flu, but local figures indicate that 97 people have died in California to date. A 104-year-old resident of San Francisco's Chinatown, who was in good health and still went to work at a grocery store in Chinatown every day, recently passed away after contracting the flu.
This year's flu vaccine targets the H3N2 influenza strain, which is the primary virus in this outbreak. The CDC reports that there are still three months left in the flu season, and as the virus continues to spread, the number of cases is still rising. Based on current trends, the situation may become more severe as the season progresses. Therefore, authorities are urging those who have not yet been vaccinated to do so as soon as possible.
