The Canadian federal government recently announced that it will reopen the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) for applications at noon on January 2, 2018. Canadian citizens or permanent residents who intend to sponsor their parents or grandparents for immigration may begin submitting an "Interest to Sponsor" form online. The deadline for the immigration office to accept these submissions is noon on February 1, 2018.
Due to the limited number of spots for the Canadian Parents and Grandparents Program in the past, combined with a high volume of applicants, a backlog of applications had accumulated. In 2017, the Canadian federal government introduced a new application method for the Parents and Grandparents Program, specifically a "random selection" model, aimed at making the application process more fair and transparent. Applicants must first submit an "Interest to Sponsor" form online, and then participate in a random selection process. Those selected will receive an invitation to apply for immigration.
To ensure effective operations, the immigration office will only accept "Interest to Sponsor" forms from those who meet the eligibility requirements. Specifically, the applicant must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, and meet certain income requirements.
According to the million-new-immigrant plan previously launched by the Canadian federal government, the quota for the 2018 Parents and Grandparents Program remains the same as in 2017, at 20,000 spots. Of these, 10,000 are allocated to new applicants participating in the "random selection," while the other 10,000 are used to clear the backlog of old cases. The target for 2019 is 20,500, and for 2020, it is 21,000.
Providing for the elderly and caring for the young is a common aspiration for many. The Canadian government allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to immigrate to Canada. Canadian Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Ahmed Hussen, stated, "Helping citizens or immigrant families reunite is one of the federal government's top priorities. I sincerely invite those who meet the eligibility requirements to express their interest to the government and submit their applications. The government has promised to maintain the integrity of citizens' and immigrants' families, allowing them to successfully integrate and put down roots in Canada."
Canada's welcoming attitude toward new immigrants is undoubtedly a positive development for families wishing to immigrate to Canada. It is not difficult to immigrate to Canada, enjoy the country's livable environment and free healthcare, and provide children with a world-class education.
