A child's education is the top priority for a family. From kindergarten, parents hope to provide the best possible education for their children so they can get a head start in the college entrance examination (Gaokao). However, many people are unaware that there is a greater shortcut to entering prestigious universities through the Gaokao: becoming an overseas Chinese student. The "Joint Entrance Examination for Overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Students to Universities in Mainland China" (referred to as the "Joint Entrance Exam for Overseas Chinese Students") they take is not only much less difficult than the regular Gaokao, but also offers a greater advantage for admission to top domestic universities.
1. Eligibility for Overseas Chinese Students:
Those who have completed high school (equivalent to the sixth year of secondary school) and meet one of the following registration conditions may apply:
① Candidates from Hong Kong or Macao holding a permanent resident identity card of Hong Kong or Macao and a "Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents."
② Candidates from Hong Kong or Macao holding a non-permanent resident identity card of Hong Kong or Macao and a "Mainland Travel Permit for Hong Kong and Macao Residents."
③ Candidates from Taiwan holding a "Mainland Travel Permit for Taiwan Residents."
④ Overseas Chinese candidates must have obtained long-term or permanent residency in a foreign country and have a record of actual residence abroad for at least 2 years within the last four years (as of the end of the registration period). (Living abroad for a full 9 months in a year counts as one year; continuous residence is not required. The calculation rule for a year is: a calendar year, or the past year from the registration deadline of each year. Two years totaling 18 months cannot be directly counted as two years; each year must be calculated separately. Studying abroad or working abroad on official business cannot be considered as permanent settlement).
At the time of registration, the candidate must hold a notarized certificate or authentication (in Chinese or English) of having obtained long-term or permanent residency in a foreign country issued by the Embassy or Consulate of the People's Republic of China, as well as a passport of the People's Republic of China. Overseas Chinese candidates must register and take the exam at test centers in Shanghai, Fujian, or Guangzhou; test centers in Beijing, Hong Kong, and Macao do not accept applications from overseas Chinese candidates. The documents held by the candidate must be within their validity period.
2. What is the Joint Entrance Exam?
The full name of the "Joint Entrance Exam" is the "Joint Entrance Examination for Overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Students to Universities in Mainland China," referred to as the CUUAT exam.
3. Registration and Exam Dates for the Joint Entrance Exam
For the specific exam dates each year, please refer to the "Admissions Brochure published by the Office of the Joint Entrance Examination for Overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Students to Universities in Mainland China" for that year.
4. Where are the exam locations for the Joint Entrance Exam nationwide?
Currently, there are Xiamen, Shanghai, Fuzhou, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, and Macao. Specific exam venues are arranged by the admissions offices of each examination authority.
5. Advantages of the Joint Entrance Exam
The questions are very simple: The difficulty of the exam papers is far lower than that of the domestic regular Gaokao papers. For example, the difficulty of math problems is similar to the examples in the textbooks.
Low admission scores: The admission threshold for the exam is far lower than the admission score for the domestic regular Gaokao.
Language advantage: This exam is designed for overseas Chinese children who have never attended school in China, making it easy for students born and raised domestically.
Almost no competition: Very few people sign up for this type of exam each year, and it does not occupy the regular Gaokao enrollment quotas of universities, so there is basically no competition.
Guaranteed fallback: If the score is not high enough, one can apply for preparatory courses, which only requires one extra year of study compared to a normal undergraduate program.
6. Exam Subject Categories
Exam subjects for Liberal Arts majors: Chinese, Mathematics, English, History, Geography
Exam subjects for Science, Engineering, Agriculture, and Medicine majors: Chinese, Mathematics, English, Physics, Chemistry
The full score for each subject is 150 points, and the full score for each subject category is 750 points.
7. How do art and sports candidates take the exam?
Qualified applicants, in addition to registering for the "Joint Entrance Examination for Overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan Students to Universities in Mainland China" cultural subjects, must also register for the professional exams organized separately by each art institution.
Other information about overseas Chinese students:
Question 1: Does the admission of overseas Chinese students occupy the national regular Gaokao enrollment quota of universities?
It does not occupy the regular Gaokao enrollment quota of the admitting universities, because this is a separate Gaokao designed specifically for overseas Chinese and students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
Question 2: Is the tuition fee for overseas Chinese students higher than that of students admitted through the regular Gaokao?
According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education, the tuition fees for admitted overseas Chinese students are the same as those for domestic students; there is no differential tuition fee system.
