Breaking! The method for replacing the Canadian Permanent Resident Card, which has been in use for over a decade, is finally about to change! No need to mail documents for applications anymore!!!
The Canadian Ministry of Immigration has just announced the upcoming launch of a new electronic platform to facilitate the public's application for the replacement of the Permanent Resident Card. Unlike before, applicants will need to upload professional digital photographs without having to mail in documents. The Ministry of Immigration has not disclosed a specific date for the new platform's release but has confirmed that it will be available once system debugging is complete.
According to spokesperson Sun Zhou-en (Faith St John) from the Ministry of Immigration, applicants must have their photographs taken by a professional photographer. Earlier this year, the Ministry reached out to photographers across the country to provide them with the requirements for taking digital photographs for the Permanent Resident Card, including how photographers should verify the identity of the person being photographed.
The following are the specifications and requirements for digital photographs for the Canadian Permanent Resident Card compiled by WorldWay Immigration based on official information from the Immigration Department:
1. The photograph must be taken by a commercial photographer.
2. 50mm wide * 70mm high (2 inches wide * 2-3/4 inches long), the height of the face from chin to crown (natural crown) should be between 31mm (1-1/4 inches) and 36mm (1-7/16 inches).
3. Clear, sharp, and in focus.
4. Natural facial expression (eyes open, clear and bright, mouth closed, no smiling).
5. Uniform lighting with no shadows, glare, or reflections.
6. The face and shoulders must be centered in the camera (for example, the photograph must show a full view of a person's head and shoulders, ensuring the full view is in the center of the photo).
7. White background, the photograph must display natural skin tone.
8. The original photograph must not have been altered or modified from previous photographs.
9. The photograph must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last six months).
10. Professionally printed on high-quality, flat photographic paper (home printing or printing on heavy, hard paper is not accepted).
The conditions for applying to replace the Permanent Resident Card are that permanent residents must have lived in Canada for at least two years within the past five years, and their Permanent Resident Card has expired or will expire within nine months. They must submit their application while in Canada. If they are outside the country, they will need to apply for a Permanent Resident Travel Document and can only apply for a new Permanent Resident Card after returning to Canada. The application fee is CAD 50. The Canadian government expects that about 200,000 people will apply for a renewal or replacement of their Permanent Resident Card this year, similar to the number of applicants in 2016.
If the application is approved, the Ministry of Immigration will mail a new Permanent Resident Card. Once permanent residents receive the new card, they will need to destroy their old card, for example, by cutting it in half. The Ministry of Immigration states that currently, the average processing time for each Permanent Resident Card replacement application is about 70 days, and the new online service is expected to speed up processing, which is indeed good news for immigrants to Canada.
