As is well known, the United States, with its world-class educational resources, sound and comprehensive welfare system, and market atmosphere full of opportunities, strives to create a higher-quality living environment for every resident, naturally becoming one of the top choices for high-net-worth individuals to immigrate overseas. Naturally, the U.S. EB-5 investment immigration program has become one of the most popular ways to immigrate to the United States due to its various superior conditions.
As you know, once foreign nationals obtain a U.S. Green Card, they basically enjoy the same treatment as U.S. citizens. However, obtaining a Green Card does not mean the process is over once and for all. Worldway Immigration Group reminds everyone that there are many subsequent issues to be aware of after becoming a U.S. permanent resident.
1. After foreign nationals obtain a Green Card and become U.S. permanent residents, they can live, study, and work in the United States permanently. However, permanent residents are still foreign nationals, holding their home country's passport and nationality; only their residency status in the United States has changed. Therefore, Green Card holders should maintain the validity of their home country's passport for at least six months;
2. After foreign nationals obtain a Green Card with "immigrant intent," they should pay attention to maintaining the continuity of that "immigrant intent." According to U.S. immigration law, if a permanent resident leaves the country for more than six months, or leaves for more than one year without a Reentry Permit, the immigration authorities may very likely determine that you have abandoned your permanent resident status and revoke your Green Card;
3. The validity period of a U.S. Green Card is generally 10 years. Green Cards obtained through investment immigration and marriage immigration are generally valid for 2 years, which are conditional Green Cards. Holders of conditional Green Cards should apply to the immigration authorities to remove the conditions within 90 days before the 2-year period expires. Only after approval can they maintain their permanent resident status; otherwise, they will lose their Green Card status;
4. As a U.S. permanent resident, you must pay taxes to the Internal Revenue Service. Failure to do so will have an adverse impact on future naturalization;
effects;
5. In the United States, only U.S. citizens have the right to vote and be elected. Therefore, permanent residents cannot impersonate U.S. citizens to participate in elections;
6. Green Card holders can apply for naturalization after meeting certain residency requirements. If a permanent resident meets the requirement of having lived in the United States continuously for 5 years (3 years for spouses of U.S. citizens) while holding a Green Card, and has actually resided in the United States for at least 2.5 years (1.5 years for spouses of U.S. citizens) within those 5 years, possesses basic English reading, speaking, and writing skills, has good moral character, understands basic knowledge of U.S. history and government, and is loyal to the U.S. Constitution, they can submit a naturalization application within 90 days before the 5-year continuous residence period expires. After becoming a U.S. citizen, you will enjoy more benefits than a permanent resident;
7. If a Green Card holder is a male between 18 and 25 years old, he must register for the Selective Service, otherwise it will affect future naturalization;
8. Permanent residents can apply for immigration for their spouses and unmarried children under 21, as well as unmarried children over 21. These fall under the F-2A and F-2B categories, respectively, and both require waiting for quota scheduling;
9. Permanent residents who are about to turn 14 should submit an application for a Green Card renewal to the immigration authorities within 30 days before their 14th birthday to obtain a new Green Card;
10. If your address changes, you should notify the immigration authorities in a timely manner;
11. You should carry your Green Card with you. If your Green Card is lost, stolen, damaged, expired, or contains incorrect information, you should renew it in a timely manner.
