【WorldWay Immigration News】 When his permanent residency hindered his newlywed wife from coming to the United States, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella surprisingly gave up his hard-earned green card and opted to apply for an H-1B visa to bring his wife over, a move that sparked discussions within the company.
In fact, prior to this, Nadella had seriously considered resigning from Microsoft and returning to India, even though he had obtained his green card, because his wife Anu, whom he married in 1993, was unable to travel to Seattle. Immigration law stipulates that if a green card holder marries, the spouse's visa application will be denied, a law that is still in effect today.
Nadella mentions this experience in his new book "Hit Refresh," asking, "Why did I give up my green card for a temporary status?" Because the H-1B visa allows the spouse of the visa holder to come to the U.S. during the work period, "this is the absurd logic of immigration law," but he could not change the law, and bringing his wife to the U.S. was a priority, making the decision relatively simple.
In June 1994, Nadella went to the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi and told the staff that he wanted to give up his green card and apply for an H-1B visa; the shocked staff asked for the reason, and Nadella mentioned the crazy immigration policy. The staff shook their heads and handed him a form.
The next morning, he returned to the embassy to apply for the H-1B visa, and a miracle happened; everything went smoothly, and Anu finally arrived in Seattle to live with her husband and build a family together. However, this move unexpectedly made him famous at Microsoft, with some pointing at Nadella saying, "He is the guy who gave up his green card."
