Fresh big data is out! The latest 2016 Canadian census data shows that the immigrant (naturalized) population accounts for 21.9% of Canada's total, approaching the 22.3% recorded in the 1921 census, marking the highest level in 85 years and reaching a century-long peak. Statistics Canada projects that this figure will rise to 30% by 2036.
This data covers the immigrant population, ethnic diversity, housing, and the Indigenous population. The data shows that 1,212,075 new immigrants settled in Canada between 2011 and 2016. Of these, 60.3% were investment immigrants, with nearly half of the remainder consisting of skilled workers.
【2017 Goals】
According to the data, immigrants from Asia account for the largest proportion of the new immigrant population (over 60%), with China being the third-largest source country at 10.6% (the first and second largest being the Philippines at 15.6% and India at 12.1%, respectively). Meanwhile, Africa has surpassed Europe to become the second-largest source of new immigrants to Canada (13.4%).
In terms of trends, the majority of new immigrants have chosen to settle in the Western Prairie provinces (mostly concentrated in Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan), with only 39% (compared to 55.9% in 2001) continuing to choose Ontario as their point of entry.
