It is well known that Canada is a bilingual country, with English and French as its official languages. However, in recent years, with the influx of new immigrants, the linguistic landscape in Canada has undergone significant changes, with Mandarin becoming the largest non-official language in Canada!
According to reports, the recent release of the "Household, Marriage, and Language" section of the 2016 Census by Statistics Canada shows that there are 7.6 million people in Canada who do not speak an official language at home, an increase of about 1 million since 2011. Notably, the number of people speaking Chinese is the highest, and immigrants from China are quite proud of this!
The report indicates that in 2016, nearly 23% of Canadians reported that their mother tongue is neither English nor French, but rather "other" languages. In contrast, 20.4% of Canadians reported that French is their mother tongue, a decrease from 21.3% in 2011. Meanwhile, 74.7% of Canadians speak English at home, a slight increase from 74% in 2011.
In this regard, Jean-Pierre Corbeil, Assistant Director of Statistics Canada, stated that when comparing the official languages of French and the other 200 languages in Canada, we must be cautious, as French is unlikely to be surpassed by another language in the foreseeable future, especially since English and French are the languages that immigrants need to master upon arriving in Canada.
The report shows that if we exclude the official languages—English and French—the most commonly spoken non-official language at home is Mandarin.
641,100 people speak Mandarin at home;
594,705 people speak Cantonese at home;
568,375 people speak Punjabi at home;
553,495 people speak Spanish at home;
525,375 people speak Tagalog (Filipino) at home;
514,200 people speak Arabic at home.
The number of people who frequently speak Chinese among non-official languages has increased by 16.8% since 2011! During this period, the number of speakers of other non-official languages has grown even faster, with Filipino increasing by 35%, Arabic by 30%, Persian by 26.7%, Hindi by 26.1%, and Urdu by 25%.
In contrast, the number of speakers of non-official languages brought in by earlier waves of immigration to Canada, including Italian (-10.9%), Polish (-5.5%), German (-3.3%), and Greek (-2.3%), has declined. This also reflects, to some extent, that the main sources of immigration to Canada have shifted from Europe to regions such as Asia.
At this point, I must mention that this report also shows that Canada remains true to its original intention of promoting diversity, as it is indeed becoming increasingly diverse. It is no wonder that many immigrants to Canada say that they quickly feel adapted and integrated, with little sense of alienation or discomfort, because Canada truly is a diverse and inclusive country!
As a classic traditional immigration country, Canada not only boasts cultural diversity and strong inclusivity but also offers world-leading welfare benefits, an excellent living environment, and top-notch educational resources, attracting a large number of immigrants each year.
In the context of tightening immigration policies in traditional immigration countries, the Quebec Investment Immigration program, as a long-standing immigration project in Canada, serves as one of the best springboards for applicants who wish to immigrate to Canada through investment. Therefore, it has always been favored by investors, and once opened, the quotas are quickly sold out each year.
This year, the Quebec Investment Immigration program opened for applications on May 29, with a total of 1,900 application slots available globally (including 1,330 slots for China, including Hong Kong and Macau). WorldWay Immigration Group has learned that as of now, the application slots for this year’s Quebec Investment Immigration are already in high demand, and the next round of openings may face price increases. Therefore, investors interested in applying for Quebec Investment Immigration should act early to avoid price risks; the sooner you apply, the more peace of mind you will have!
Currently, the project team and copywriting team of WorldWay Immigration Group, along with the establishment of a branch in Canada and strong local partners, are fully prepared to open a fast track for investors to secure Quebec Investment Immigration quotas, assisting investors in successfully immigrating to Canada!
