According to reports, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced on the 20th that the Australian government will comprehensively tighten the requirements for Australian citizenship. For Australian immigrants, those who wish to become Australian citizens in the future will need to reside in Australia for at least four years after becoming permanent residents and must pass an English language test. For Australian immigrants, this means that the difficulty of becoming an Australian citizen will be significantly increased.
It is reported that the changes to Australian citizenship requirements include:
1. Applicants must take an English language test; those who do not meet the standards will be unable to apply for citizenship.
2. After obtaining an Australian permanent residency visa, one must reside in Australia for at least four years before being eligible to apply for citizenship. Previously, the requirement was that applicants needed to reside in Australia for four years on a valid visa, with the 12 months immediately preceding the application being as a permanent resident.
3. Applicants must commit to supporting and adhering to Australian values. The values test includes the applicant's attitude toward issues such as religious freedom, violence against women, child marriage, and ensuring the right of girls to education.
4. There will be a limit of three attempts for the Australian citizenship test; if the test is not passed, one will be unable to obtain citizenship.
The Australian citizenship test is a closed-book, computer-based English exam. During the test, mobile phones and electronic devices must be turned off. The test duration is 45 minutes, and those requiring assistance must also complete it within 90 minutes. The total score for the Australian citizenship test is 100 points, with a passing score of 75, meaning applicants must answer 15 out of 20 multiple-choice questions correctly.
In addition, the Australian federal government also plans to introduce a series of major policies. Citizenship applications may be rejected if the following conditions are not met, including:
1. Proof of employment (citizenship applicants must prove they are employed);
2. Proof of tax payment (citizenship applicants must provide records of tax payments to the ATO);
3. Mandatory school enrollment for children (if applicants have children, they must be enrolled in Australian schools);
4. Participation in community activities (applicants must prove they have participated in community activities and have become members of their local communities).
Previously, the Australian government had already revealed that it was developing plans to replace the citizenship test established during the Howard era with one containing more modern content. The Australian government hopes to use this to assess whether applicants have integrated into the Australian way of life and have accepted Australian social values.
