Ms. Inci Otker, head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission for consultations with St. Kitts and Nevis, recently led an IMF team on a visit to the country. During the visit, the IMF commended St. Kitts and Nevis for its strong economic performance against the backdrop of global economic difficulties, as well as the government's efforts to strengthen the world's oldest Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program.
In 2016, many major economies struggled with limited growth rates amid global economic challenges, including the United States (1.6% growth), Canada (1.3% growth), Japan (1.0% growth), and the United Kingdom (1.8% growth). However, despite global economic difficulties, the economy of St. Kitts and Nevis achieved 3.2% growth in 2016, and Ms. Inci Otker expects further growth in 2017.
IMF officials also noted that the growth performance of St. Kitts and Nevis actually exceeded the average growth rate achieved by peers in the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) region, which is quite impressive. The Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU) includes Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
The strong economic performance of St. Kitts and Nevis is greatly aided by its robust Citizenship by Investment program and its spillover effects on the economy, as well as the government's overall prudent macroeconomic policies, especially in a very challenging regional and global economic environment. Ms. Inci Otker commended the St. Kitts government for strengthening its processes, noting that the St. Kitts immigration authority's enhancement of due diligence procedures is a "very welcome" step, and pointed out that it helps to "mitigate integrity and security risks, and preserve the credibility and reputation of the citizenship program, avoiding a race to the bottom."
