Most individuals who obtain a U.S. permanent green card through investment immigration can enjoy the high welfare benefits of the United States, travel freely to multiple countries, and explore the world. However, obtaining a U.S. investment immigration green card does not mean that one has acquired U.S. citizenship; there are indeed certain differences between a U.S. green card and U.S. citizenship. Where do these differences manifest?
Difference One: Voting Rights
U.S. citizens have the right to vote for federal, state, and local government officials. Holders of a U.S. green card, including investment immigrants, do not have the right to vote or run for office until they become citizens. Many countries also offer visa exemptions for U.S. citizens, making entry with a U.S. passport more convenient.
Difference Two: Sponsoring Relatives for Immigration to the U.S.
U.S. immigration law stipulates that U.S. citizens can sponsor their relatives to become U.S. permanent residents without any numerical limits, and the waiting time for a green card is significantly shorter. Additionally, if the applicant becomes a U.S. citizen, they can apply for immigration for their immediate relatives while they are visiting the U.S., and these relatives do not need to go through exit procedures; they can legally stay in the U.S. waiting for the final approval of their immigration application, which generally has a very low chance of denial, only varying in waiting time.
Difference Three: U.S. Citizens Cannot Be Deported
Many immigration applicants do not wish to commit crimes, but they may become victims of circumstances at the wrong time and place. However, if one is a U.S. citizen, they will not face the risk of deportation. U.S. citizens also do not need to worry about losing their green card or being unable to return to the U.S. after living abroad for an extended period.
From the above three points, it is evident that there are indeed certain differences between a U.S. investment immigration green card and U.S. citizenship. Although there are not many differences in terms of benefits, investors can choose whether to naturalize based on their own wishes and circumstances.
