Stay updated on the latest immigration news in the United States. The WorldWay Immigration Service Center in Los Angeles has learned from the Center for Immigration Studies that the total number of immigrants in the United States and their children under 18 has exceeded 61 million, meaning that 1 in 5 people in the United States is an immigrant. The high-quality education, healthcare, and social welfare benefits, along with various factors such as overseas asset allocation, have contributed to the United States becoming one of the countries that attracts a large immigrant population globally.
According to a report from the Center for Immigration Studies, as of December 2015, the immigrant population in the United States reached 61 million, of which three-quarters, or 45.3 million, are legal immigrants and their children. The report indicates that nearly one-fifth (18.9% of the total population) of U.S. residents are from immigrant families, far exceeding the historical record of immigrant population ratios in modern U.S. history. In 1970, the immigrant population in the United States was only 1.35 million, accounting for 6.6% of the U.S. population, with 1 in 15 Americans being an immigrant. However, since 2000, the number of immigrants has increased by 18.4 million.
Furthermore, the report emphasizes that the growth rate of the immigrant population is six times that of the overall population. Over the 45 years from 1970 to 2015, the population of immigrants and their children grew by 353%, while the national population of the United States only grew by 59%. In the report, Steven Camarota, the research director at the Center for Immigration Studies, further analyzed the number of immigrants in various states. The results show that states with high increases in immigrant populations include Georgia, Nevada, North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennessee, Virginia, Oklahoma, Texas, and Arizona.
