Cyprus has consistently been a top choice for investment immigrants, with its living standards and education ranking among the best in the European Union. Cyprus joined the Commonwealth in 1961, has reached an upper-middle European standard, and is recognized by the World Health Organization as having attained the level of a developed country. In Cyprus, there is one general practitioner for every 480 people. All major cities have public hospitals, and smaller public hospitals and clinics have been established in other areas, alongside private hospitals and clinics run by physicians.
Public hospitals provide free emergency treatment to everyone (whether they are citizens or foreigners, and regardless of whether foreigners hold permanent residency status). After obtaining permanent residency, you only need to purchase medical insurance for approximately 200 Euros and then register at any local public hospital. Upon registration, the hospital will issue a medical card, which allows you to receive free medical treatment at any public hospital in Cyprus, enjoying the same medical benefits as local residents.
Outpatient diagnoses and a series of examinations are free of charge. If a doctor prescribes medication, you can take the prescription to a pharmacy to purchase it. Because hospitals in Cyprus operate under a strict separation of medical services and pharmacy management to protect patient rights, you must purchase medication at specialized pharmacies. You can then take the purchase receipt to your insurance company for reimbursement; therefore, medication prescribed for medical treatment in Cyprus is effectively free.
Hospitalization and surgery are also free of charge, and there is no need for you to pay upfront and seek reimbursement from the insurance company.
You may also choose another type of medical insurance, which is more expensive, costing approximately 2000 Euros. With this insurance, all medical treatment at any hospital in Cyprus, including both public and private hospitals, is fully free of charge.
Private hospitals in Cyprus also offer excellent environments and do not require waiting in line. Before your consultation, you simply need to provide your insurance number to receive free medical care. As with public hospitals, your initial diagnosis, series of examinations, medication, surgery, and hospitalization are all free in private hospitals as well. It is worth noting that private hospitals in Cyprus are generally smaller, and sometimes there may be no available beds for patients after surgery. In such cases, the patient may need to be transferred to a public hospital for further recovery.
It should be specifically noted here that whether in public or private hospitals, and whether the patient is a Cypriot citizen or a permanent resident, dental and ophthalmological services in Cypriot hospitals require payment.
