Mayor Bill de Blasio recently announced the launch of the LinkNYC program, which will install Wi-Fi kiosks across the city to replace traditional phone booths, allowing the public to make free calls and access the internet with speeds of up to 1 GB per second.
It is reported that LinkNYC is a multi-functional kiosk similar to a phone booth. In addition to connecting to Wi-Fi, the public can use it to make free calls to any landline or mobile phone within the United States. In case of an emergency, users can also dial 911. The kiosks are equipped with touchscreens for those without mobile phones or computers to search for information, and they even feature two USB ports for convenient charging if your phone runs out of power. Currently, 14 LinkNYC kiosks are available on 3rd Avenue in Manhattan. It is estimated that there will be 500 kiosks across New York by the end of July, and approximately 4,500 by mid-2019.
