Immigrating to Canada Focus on Canadian guides: Driving in Canada during winter is by no means an easy task. Many immigrants have likely experienced the frustration of wheels spinning in the snow without being able to move. Jaela Bernstien of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) specifically interviewed Oren Pressler, an instructor at the Montreal Morty Driving School, to seek his advice on how to drive safely on winter's "treacherous" roads for the reference of our immigrant friends.
Slow Down in Winter
Pressler states that the most critical point when driving in snowy and icy conditions is to adjust your speed according to road conditions. Never drive too fast, and be sure to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front. Cars often cannot stop immediately on snow and will slide for a distance, so people need to "leave room" for the possibility of the car in front braking suddenly.
Do Not Brake Abruptly
Pressler advises that when your car starts to skid, remember not to panic. You should turn the steering wheel gently, and once the vehicle is straightened, lightly press the brake, then use a "pump" braking technique—releasing and pressing repeatedly. Of course, if your car is equipped with an ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), this system will also work automatically to help prevent skidding.
What to Do When Your Car Skids Uphill
For situations where the car is skidding and cannot move forward while going uphill, Pressler's advice is: do not panic; do not floor the accelerator, as this will only cause the car to continue skidding; press the accelerator lightly, and once you feel the traction between the tires and the ground return, then press the accelerator normally to accelerate.
Driving Behind Large Trucks
Pressler shared a terrifying experience of his own. One winter, his car was following a large transport truck, and just as he was preparing to overtake it, a large amount of snow accumulated on top of the truck suddenly fell onto his windshield. He said that at the time, his windshield wipers were not set to the high-speed setting, and as a result, he was unable to see anything for several seconds. Therefore, he suggests that if you are following a large truck in winter, or intend to overtake one, it is best to set your wipers to the highest speed setting in advance to prepare for such situations.
Worldway Friendly Reminder: Do not make any sudden movements when driving in snowy and icy conditions. If you brake too hard or press the accelerator too aggressively, it will be much easier for the car to skid. All actions should be gentle and moderate.
