In recent years, the government of Dominica has vigorously promoted agricultural production. Friends who have immigrated to Dominica know that agriculture is vital to the country's food security, provides jobs for 25% of the Dominican workforce, and contributes 12% to the Gross Domestic Product. Dominica's Minister for Agriculture, Johnson Drigo, in summarizing the agricultural situation for 2015, stated that Dominica's agriculture sector faced severe tests in 2015, and the Dominican government and farmers have worked hard to promote the development of agricultural production through technological innovation and the introduction of new varieties.
Minister Drigo stated that agriculture is extremely important to Dominica's food security. Meanwhile, in 2015, Dominica's fisheries sector achieved an output value of 6.5 million Eastern Caribbean Dollars.
Minister Drigo stated that in 2016, the government of Dominica will continue to strengthen its support for farmers in areas such as rebuilding their homes, introducing new banana varieties, and increasing the supply of fuel and pesticides. At the same time, it will strengthen cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), and the Dominica Export Import Agency (DEXIA), as well as enhance agricultural technical cooperation with countries including China, Cuba, Venezuela, Morocco, and Ecuador.
