US immigrants are concerned about immigration education. Former US President Harry S. Truman once said, "America was built on courage, on imagination and an unbeatable determination to do the job at hand." This is indeed true; American education places great emphasis on children's independence and imagination. In this issue of the "US Immigration Education" column, Visas Consulting Group explores topics related to how American children develop their imagination. Below are several principles provided by the American magazine "Parents" on how to cultivate children's imagination, for the reference of our fellow US immigrant friends:
I. Encourage children to pursue actively, and parents should lead by example
Imagination is like a muscle; it needs exercise, or it will atrophy. Reading, drawing, and walking outdoors are all active pursuits that help with imagination. Through these activities, children can learn to pursue and grow in an active manner. It is worth noting that a parent's example is better than any early education method! "Actions speak louder than words" is the principle here.
II. Try to discover children's interests and strengths
Interest is the best teacher. When children are playing, provide sufficient materials, tools, and equipment for them to play freely, and try to observe and discover their interests and strengths during play. American classrooms often place many materials on tables: such as paper towels, colored pens, garlands, glue, and modeling clay. The children's task is to use these materials to create their own works. In these specific activities, children's autonomy and initiative are fully exerted, which is usually when they feel the most accomplished!

III. Once interests are discovered, one must learn to persist
Children have the right to choose the sports or musical instruments they like within a certain range. However, the requirement from parents is usually: once chosen, they must persist in learning for at least one year, regardless of whether they like it or not, which will guide children to think about their choices. But parents should let children think thoroughly before choosing; they cannot choose casually. Once a choice is made, they need to make efforts and try.
IV. Learn to let go, and cultivate children's independent and brave personality
This point is crucial. Learn to "let go" and allow children's nature to be fully exerted by returning to nature and society. If parents worry too much or have too many concerns, and intervene too much, it will affect the child's creativity. Clothes can be washed if they get dirty, and tablecloths can be replaced if they are damaged, but once a child has too many concerns, they will become hesitant or timid, which is a shadow that can never be repaired in a lifetime.
V. Parents should participate actively and guide children's learning through play
Parents should participate more in children's games and pay more attention to guidance and the explanation of knowledge. For example, when talking about rainbows, parents can simply explain: it is formed by the reflection and refraction of light when it encounters small water droplets in the air. This is not to make them memorize it, but to strengthen their sensitivity to this knowledge through constant repetition. Over time, this will develop a thinking habit of exploring the mysteries of nature.
VI. Learn to be tolerant and treat children's growth with a normal heart
The quality of works that young children can create is always limited. Parents should not be overly perfectionist or expect their children to become prodigies. Every child wants to do well, but it is not that they do not want to do well; their muscles, reaction speed, and physical fitness may not be as good as expected. Parents should be more tolerant of their children.
VII. The power of encouragement is always better than coercion
If a child is not interested, never force them to learn a certain art project. Parents should understand that even if a child shows interest in a certain type of art, their attention cannot always be focused on this aspect. Parents must encourage and guide more, rather than forcing children to do things they do not like.
