In recent years, domestic housing prices have soared, making "overseas property investment" highly sought after by Chinese investors. Investing abroad, immigrating has become a fashionable trend. In this trend, some European countries, thanks to property investment immigration policies, have become the top choices for many investors, such as Portugal. Portugal is located by the Mediterranean Sea and is known as Europe’s vacation paradise. Currently, the real estate market is favorable, and the tourism industry is thriving, with immense potential for growth.
Obtaining immigration status through property purchase in Portugal is closely tied to government policies, making the political landscape in Portugal a focal point for investors. On November 24, the Portuguese Presidency issued a statement announcing that President Silva decided to appoint Socialist Party leader Costa as the new Prime Minister after discussions with representatives from various political parties. The statement indicated that continuing the minority government led by Social Democratic Party leader Coelho was no longer in the national interest of Portugal.
Previously, Silva required Costa to provide six guarantees, primarily including the smooth passage of the 2016 national budget in parliament, continuing to fulfill Portugal's commitments to the international community, and ensuring national financial stability.
The governing coalition formed by the Social Democratic Party led by Coelho and the People's Party led by Portas won the parliamentary elections held on October 4, defeating the main opposition party, the Socialist Party, but only secured 107 seats out of 230 in parliament, failing to achieve a majority and could only form a minority government.
On November 10, the governance plan of the Coelho government was rejected in a parliamentary vote by the new left-wing party alliance led by the Socialist Party, leading to the government's automatic resignation, making it the shortest-lived government in Portugal since the democratization in 1974.
Costa, 54 years old, graduated from the Faculty of Law at the University of Lisbon. He previously served as the Mayor of Lisbon (2007-2015) and was elected as the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party at the end of 2014. Although the Socialist Party lost in the Portuguese elections, the alliance formed with the Left Bloc and the Portuguese Communist Party secured a majority with 122 seats in parliament.
