Hong Kong Immigration focuses on Hong Kong Immigration Economy: The Secretary for Home Affairs of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Lau Kong-wah, stated on the 1st that social enterprises (SEs) have been steadily developing in Hong Kong. The number of SEs has increased from approximately 260 in 2008 to over 520 currently, achieving a remarkable growth of 100%.
On the same day, Lau Kong-wah mentioned at an international seminar on social enterprises that the number of social enterprises in Hong Kong is significantly higher in proportion to the population compared to other Asian regions such as South Korea and Singapore.
He pointed out that the HKSAR government welcomes the increasing diversification of social enterprises. In addition to providing employment opportunities for disadvantaged communities, more social enterprises are pursuing broader social goals through innovative means, such as community integration, cultural preservation, enriching lives, and promoting environmental protection.
Lau Kong-wah also stated that another encouraging aspect is that more individuals from various sectors, such as youth, professionals, businesspeople, and community organizations, are engaging in social enterprises, injecting new momentum into their development. The business sector fulfills its social responsibility and creates shared value by collaborating with and even investing in social enterprises.
He expressed that the current conditions for developing social enterprises in Hong Kong are becoming increasingly complete, with over 30 supporting organizations for social enterprise development through cross-sector collaboration.
Lau Kong-wah pointed out that the HKSAR government will continue to strengthen support, deepen public awareness, promote cross-sector collaboration, and fund individual social enterprise projects in four areas to provide a favorable environment and support for the development of social enterprises, allowing the community to unleash its entrepreneurial potential and achieve social good.
