UK Immigration Focus on UK Immigrant Life: According to a report by BBC Chinese on October 28, the UK's Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) has begun advertising for intelligence talent on the country's largest parenting website, Mumsnet. With the global premiere of the latest 007 film, Spectre, held in London, MI6 has started recruiting a new generation of agents in real life by consulting with Mumsnet.
The UK Parliament issued a report this March, requesting that British intelligence agencies value the "valuable life experience" of middle-aged mothers. The Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament pointed out that MI5, MI6, and the Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) have over 12,000 employees, of which only 37% are women, with most holding junior positions; the proportion of women in senior positions is only 19%. The report suggests helping women reach their full potential rather than being sidelined in the workplace after having children.
This report was led by British Member of Parliament Hazel Blears. Blears believes that intelligence personnel with similar backgrounds and characteristics may develop similar "biases" regarding the same event, which is detrimental to identifying problems and seeking solutions. She believes that when national security faces threats, the diversity of intelligence personnel contributes to intelligence analysis and response. Blears also emphasized that middle-aged women have rich life experience, which helps in gathering intelligence, and suggested that authorities explore talent through different channels.
Justine Roberts, CEO of Mumsnet, stated, "MI6 posted recruitment advertisements on the website in May, and the number of applications received exceeded that of other recruitment ads on the site." Blears added, "MI6 certainly didn't tell us whether their recruitment was successful, but they went on to post ads three more times; you can imagine they received a positive response."
The proposal by the UK Parliament was inspired by France's largest intelligence agency, the Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE). The proportion of female employees at the DGSE is only 26%, which is even lower than that of British intelligence units. A French magazine published an article last week regarding female employees at the DGSE. Compared to the phenomenon of women being undervalued within British and French intelligence units, the proportion of women at the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is as high as 48%, indicating greater gender equality.
