I. Driver's License Application
Applicants must be at least 18 years old to learn to drive at a driving school. The driving school will handle all paperwork and schedule the examinations.
Applicant Requirements:
Ordinary resident of Greece, with relevant proof provided;
Does not hold a driver's license of the same category issued by the EU or EEA;
Meets the minimum mental and physical requirements for the license category applied for;
Passes the theoretical test and the road test.
According to relevant regulations, for non-EU and non-EEA driver's licenses, you may drive in Greece for 185 days (6 months), after which a Greek driver's license is required. When driving in Greece, foreign licenses can be exchanged for a Greek license, but this depends on the country; if it cannot be exchanged, a driving test must be taken.
II. License Categories and Age Restrictions
The age restrictions for the most common Greek driver's licenses are as follows:
AM(mopeds with speeds between 25Km/h and 45Km/h): 16 years old
A1 (motorcycles with a cylinder capacity not exceeding 125cc) :18 years old
A2 (motorcycles with power not exceeding 35KW): 20 years old
B1 (light quadricycles): 18 years old
B(cars): 18 years old
C1(medium-sized vehicles): 18 years old
III. Required Documents
1.Application form;
2.Copy of Greek ID card or passport, showing the applicant's date of birth;
3.Non-Greek nationals must provide a copy of their residence permit: proof of residence or residence permit. The document must be valid on the date of application and at the time of receiving the Greek driver's license; therefore, the document must have at least 95 days (EU and EEA) or 185 days (other countries) of validity remaining.
4.Two medical certificates. One from a general practitioner and one from an ophthalmologist, along with a payment receipt for the health certificate issued by the National Bank of Greece. Both types of doctors mentioned above must be under contract with the Ministry of Transport.
5.Two recent color photos, passport size;
6.Proof of fee payment issued by the local tax office;
7.Original and copy of the applicant's previously held driver's license;
8.The application must be submitted to the local Department of Transport and Communications or the local Citizens' Service Center (KEP).
IV. Driver's License Examination
We suggest that you learn to spell Greek words and understand some basic grammar. During your daily study, look up the meanings of words frequently, and you will find them easy to remember. Do not worry too much; just spend some time on rote memorization.
The theoretical test is diverse and primarily image-based; it is the minimum requirement for a Greek driver's license. All tests are completed on the same day, and results are announced immediately. If the theoretical test is passed, the road test begins.
The road test for AM, A1, A2, B and BE categories lasts at least 25 minutes, while road tests for other license categories last at least 45 minutes. The applicant's instructor and two examiners will be in the vehicle to monitor the test. The road test can be taken on the same day as the theoretical test or at a later date.
If you fail the theoretical or road test, you can retake it an unlimited number of times. Once passed, you will immediately receive a temporary driving permit until the actual license is obtained.
Additionally, if you are only applying for a motorcycle license, you must take both motorcycle and car questions in the written test; if you only want a car license, you do not need to take the motorcycle questions.
V. Novice Drivers
If you successfully obtain your Greek driver's license and become a new driver, you must display a red "N" sign on the rear window of your car for 6 months. These signs can be purchased at any auto repair shop.
