Focus on Spanish immigration and life in Spain: Renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar will be honored with the European Achievement in World Cinema Award. This award is presented by the European Film Academy, and last year's recipient was actress Helen Mirren.
The European Film Academy stated that this award recognizes Pedro Almodóvar's contributions to cinema over the years, as well as his numerous outstanding works, such as his 1988 breakthrough film Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, followed by All About My Mother, Talk to Her, and others. In a statement, Almodóvar said, "I am very grateful for this award. Since its inception, the European Film Awards have been very supportive of me and have been close collaborators; I share this honor with them."
The European Film Awards were established in 1988 at the initiative of Swedish film master Ingmar Bergman and are presented by the European Film Academy, headquartered in Berlin, Germany. Known as the "European Oscars," the European Film Awards, while not enjoying the same global recognition as the Cannes, Berlin, or Venice film festivals, are highly regarded in the industry for their professional depth and artistic authority.
The European Achievement in World Cinema Award will be officially presented in Berlin on December 7 this year. Almodóvar's latest work, I'm So Excited!, was released in Spain earlier this year to positive reviews and became his best-performing film at the box office to date.
