Dove - The Messenger of Peace

According to ancient Hebrew legend, the world was created by God in seven days. God created man in His own image, the first being a man named Adam, followed by the creation of a woman named Eve, allowing them to live in the Garden of Eden. However, since Adam and Eve disobeyed God's commandments and ate the forbidden fruit from the garden, they could no longer distinguish between good and evil. Consequently, God expelled them from the Garden of Eden to the human world. Their descendants often quarreled and fought, leading God to see that the world was filled with violence, hatred, and jealousy. Regretting having created humanity, He decided to flood the world to destroy all living beings. God found that only Noah, the tenth generation descendant of Adam, was a righteous man who upheld justice, and so He decided to let him survive. Thus, Noah built a large rectangular ark according to God's instructions, taking his wife, sons, and daughters-in-law aboard. Additionally, He brought two of every kind of living creature, one male and one female, into the ark to preserve life while storing a large supply of food. On the seventh day, God began to rain down torrential rain, and the flood submerged the earth, causing all living beings to perish in the flood. Only Noah and his family were spared. The flood lasted for 150 days before it gradually receded. Noah opened a window of the ark and released a raven, which did not return for a long time. Noah then sent out a dove to check the water situation; however, with water covering the ground, the dove had nowhere to land and returned. After another seven days, Noah released the dove again, and in the evening, it returned with a freshly plucked olive branch in its beak. This branch was completely green, leading Noah to conclude that the flood had receded and the earth was safe. Accordingly, he alongside all the people and the preserved animals disembarked from the ark and began a new life on land. Noah became the new ancestor of humanity, while the dove and olive branch became symbols of peace and tranquility from that day on.

The location where the dove brought the olive branch cannot be verified; however, there exists a land of olives not far from where the ancient Hebrews lived, that land is Cyprus. There, olive trees are everywhere, seen in mountains, gardens, roadsides, and fields. The olive tree is closely linked to the lives of the island's people; it is their main food source and a primary provider of vegetable oil. Local farmers typically take only some bread and a few pickled olives when they go out, eating as they walk. They cherish the olives that benefit them, always burying the olive pits deep in the soil by the roadside after eating, hoping for new sprouts to grow the following year. On the island, when guests arrive, the host will greet them holding an olive branch; family members wave olive branches to bless those who depart. During New Year’s Eve, they burn olive branches to bid farewell to the old year, and before going out on New Year’s Day, they place olive branches to welcome the new year. The Sunday following Easter is traditionally known as 'Olive Tree Day' on the island, and on this day, residents celebrate with great enthusiasm. Cyprus is truly deserving of its title as the land of olives.
