Hong Kong University Students: Making Friends at Orientation Camp

Every year at the end of May, after the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (equivalent to the National College Entrance Examination in Mainland China), various discussion forums online will gradually see posts looking for friends. Incoming university freshmen will write their nicknames, contact numbers, email addresses, and the departments they will be studying in these posts, allowing other new students who will also attend the same university or even the same department to see them and connect online.

In addition to individuals looking for friends, there are also formal student organizations that manage groups on social media (such as Facebook), where they share their experiences, activities, school photos, and communication information to attract new students. Unfortunately, not every university or department has such student organizations.

Generally, Hong Kong university students participate in orientation camps (commonly known as O Camp) to meet new friends before officially starting their studies.

In mid-August, Hong Kong university students will register at their respective universities, and at the same time, they will strive for the opportunity to sign up for the "O Camp." Why emphasize "strive"? Because the spots for "O Camp" are limited, but almost every freshman wants to take this opportunity to meet new classmates in an unfamiliar campus as early as possible.

Orientation camps are divided into four types: "Big O," "Medium O," "Small O," and "Hall O." "Big O" is attended by all students and organized by the student union, providing a great opportunity to expand one's social circle; "Medium O" is organized by the college's officers; "Small O" is organized by the department's officers, with participants being classmates who will study together for the next few years; while "Hall O" is organized by the officers of each dormitory. Students can sign up for orientation camps based on their interests.

The duration of the orientation camp is not long, usually lasting 3 to 4 days, during which students are divided into different groups to play games. Each group will have several leaders, all of whom are senior students, referred to as "Group Dad" and "Group Mom"; each group consists of about ten new students, referred to as "Group Boys" and "Group Girls." The "Group Boys and Girls" will complete a series of games that test their team spirit under the leadership of the group leaders.
