The list of semi-finalists for the 2017 Regeneron Science Talent Search, an American high school science competition known as the 'Junior Nobel Prize,' was announced on January 4. A total of 300 students were selected, 92 of whom are high school students of Chinese descent, accounting for approximately 30%.

The 'Regeneron Science Talent Search,' formerly known as the 'Intel Science Talent Search,' was founded by the Society for Science & the Public. It is the most prestigious and competitive science competition for high school students in the United States, offering the highest prize money. Throughout its 75-year history, it has been supported by three title sponsors.

Similar to previous years, the Regeneron Science Talent Search is divided into three categories: 'Basic Research,' 'Global Good,' and 'Innovation.' The top three winners in each category will receive prizes of $250,000, $175,000, and $150,000, respectively.

The 300 students selected as semi-finalists will each receive a $2,000 award, and Regeneron will also provide an additional $2,000 to the schools of the winning students. This has effectively doubled the total prize pool for 2017 to $3.1 million.

This year's competition saw 1,749 students participate from 527 high schools across 46 U.S. states and 7 American high schools overseas. Among the 300 semi-finalists, 92 are of Chinese descent, including 30 from New York, 12 from California, and 10 from Maryland.
