The latest vote count results from the Philippine Commission on Elections early on the 10th show that Mayor Duterte of Davao City has received 14.5 million votes in the presidential election, making his victory a certainty, but it needs to be officially announced after confirmation by Congress.
Duterte has Chinese ancestry. He has stated, "I also have Chinese blood; my grandfather was Chinese. The Chinese came to the Philippines a long time ago, they have settled here, worked hard, and made significant contributions to the local economy and social development. Although, like other Chinese, I have also acquired Philippine citizenship, I am proud of my Chinese heritage."
The Philippines held its nationwide and local elections on the 9th, which occur every six years, including positions for the new president, vice president, congressional representatives, local executives, and councilors. The Philippine Commission on Elections announced that among over 54 million registered voters nationwide, 81% cast their votes at more than 92,000 polling stations across the country.
The Philippine Congress is expected to hold a meeting in early June to announce the winner of the presidential election.
