As a long-established immigration destination, many parents choose investment immigration to settle in the UK and accompany their children during their studies. According to a BBC report, a recent survey of over 1000 UK university students aged 18-19 conducted by the UK consumer organization Which revealed that approximately 28% of applicants wish they had chosen a different major, and 41% of students regret not considering the practicality of their major initially. The survey results highlight how important it is for students to have a thorough understanding of their majors when making their choices.

The survey shows that only half of university applicants have a sufficient understanding of how their chosen subjects impact their university major selection. Some degree programs require A-Level grades, and some universities do not consider these subject requirements to be overly demanding. However, only 41% of the young students surveyed were aware of this, and 30% of students complained that when they were in pre-university courses at age 16, they did not realize how the choices they made would affect their university prospects and future.

In 2011, the Russell Group published a list of the most useful subjects from its 24 member universities to provide guidance for applicants, and recommended that students entering pre-university courses should study the following two subjects to ensure a wider range of university choices in the future:

  Biology

  Chemistry

  English

  Geography

  History

  Physics

  Modern and Classical Languages

  Mathematics and Further Mathematics

Wendy Piatt, Director General of the Russell Group, stated that secondary school students should have a sufficient understanding of their majors and future development before entering university, as this is crucial for their future. The universities have also launched A-Level grade voluntary consultations to help students and their teachers understand their subject choices.
