New immigrants to the U.S. in the early stages of living in the United States may inevitably experience some short-term discomfort due to regional or cultural differences. How can new immigrants easily adapt to their new life in the U.S.? Below are some common tips for life in the U.S. that may help new immigrants resolve some of the awkward situations they encounter.

  1. Two for three dollars.

If a sign says "Two for three dollars," can you just buy one? The answer is yes. Will it be more expensive to buy just one? Actually, not at all; buying one will simply cost half the price. However, the situation is different in fast-food restaurants. For example, McDonald's often has promotional activities like "2 Subs for 4 dollars," in which case you cannot buy just one.

  2. Buy one get one free.

This is a common promotional method in the U.S., ranging from daily necessities to cars. However, because it is "buy one get one free," the price for taking two is the same as taking one, which is different from the "Two for three dollars" mentioned above.

  3. Never buying beers without your pictured ID in hand.

U.S. law requires that a picture ID must be presented when purchasing any alcoholic products (you must be of legal age to purchase alcohol). Furthermore, regulations vary by state, and some states have peculiar rules, such as Georgia, where the sale of alcohol is prohibited on Sundays.

  4. The malls close at 6pm on Sunday!

People from Asia often find it hard to understand why almost all business establishments in the U.S. close at 6:00 PM on Sundays. Therefore, if you want to go to the mall on a Sunday, please go early.

  5. Remember to renew your insurance.

Remember to renew your insurance when it expires. Some insurance companies may forget to send you a notice, so you must remember to renew it yourself. Medical expenses in the U.S. are staggering; do not gamble with your life and health.

  6. Down payment and monthly payment.

Generally, there are two ways to pay for purchases: paying in full or paying in installments. Some promotional advertisements may offer "No down payment," which means you do not need to pay an initial deposit.

  7. Pay your tag fee before your birthday.

The tag fee is the vehicle registration tax, which is paid once a year. Generally, you must pay the tag fee for the next year before your birthday; otherwise, you will be subject to a 10% penalty.

  8. Left turn first if there is a turn-left sign there.

Driving in the U.S. is quite different. When a traffic light changes from red to green, if there is a left-turn signal, it will turn on first, allowing left-turning vehicles to go first. There is no such thing as waiting to turn on a green light.

  9. Ten dollars rebate and ten dollars cashback.

Rebate and cash back are very common promotional methods. A rebate means that after you buy an item, you fill out an application form and mail it along with the receipt to the manufacturer, and they will send you a check. Cash back means you get cash back directly at checkout, but you still have to pay tax on the refunded portion.

  10. Take advantage of the first courtesy.

The so-called "first courtesy" means that if you make a mistake for the first time, you can ask for forgiveness from others (usually a bank). For example, if you miss a credit card payment deadline and are fined by the bank, or even if your car is towed, you can ask if there is a "first courtesy" policy. If there is, you might save a considerable amount in fines.
