The Blue Flag program has a long history. It was first launched in France in 1985. To date, more than 4,000 beaches in 48 countries around the world have been awarded the Blue Flag title.
The certification for Blue Flag beaches is extremely rigorous. The standards cover four aspects: water quality, environmental management, safety and services, and environmental education and information provision. Currently, no beaches in Asia have passed the assessment, while Greece, a country uniquely blessed with islands, has had 408 of its beaches awarded the "Blue Flag" title.
