IRS Commissioner John Koskinen stated that while taxpayers currently have methods to pay taxes including direct transfer, check, or credit card, those who can only pay in cash have had no convenient options other than visiting an IRS office in person. The new method of paying at 7-Eleven convenience stores is designed to assist taxpayers who do not have bank accounts or credit cards. Taxpayers wishing to use this method must have an email address.
The IRS has been working with Official Payments and PayNearMe since 1999 to promote convenient tax payment mechanisms, and continues to partner with these two companies to ensure the feasibility of tax payments at 7-Eleven stores. Taxpayers who wish to pay their taxes at a 7-Eleven store must first visit the IRS payment webpage (https://www.irs.gov/Payments), click on the cash payment option, and follow the procedures below:
1. Go to the Official Payments website and complete the PayNearMe cash payment option.
2. Official Payments will then notify the taxpayer via email to confirm that the relevant information has been received, after which the IRS will verify the accuracy of the information. The entire process takes 2 to 3 days.
3. After the IRS verifies the information, PayNearMe will send the taxpayer an email containing a link to the payment code and instructions, as well as a list of 7-Eleven convenience stores near their home.
4. Taxpayers can print out the payment code or forward it to their smartphone.
5. After the taxpayer takes the payment code to a 7-Eleven store to pay the tax, the store will provide a receipt. It will then take two business days to complete the taxpayer's tax payment process.
Currently, 7-Eleven convenience stores in over 7,000 locations across 34 states in the US are connected with PayNearMe. Taxpayers who want to use this new method should pay attention to the timing. According to IRS estimates, the entire process takes about 5 to 7 days, so it is best to start this cash payment process before April 11th to ensure tax filing and payment are completed before the April 18th deadline. Additionally, please note that there is a daily cash limit of $1,000 for tax payments at 7-Eleven stores, and a fee of $3.99 per transaction.
