Greek Immigration focus on Greek Education System: Greece generally follows the European education system, yet its educational structure is similar to that of China, with the same academic stages including preschool, primary school, middle school, high school, and university. Schools in Greece are divided into two main categories: public and private. Greece implements 12 years of free public education, with public schools receiving state funding. The following is a detailed introduction to the Greek education system.
I. Preschool Education
Preschool education in Greece lasts for 2 years.
II. Primary Education
Primary education lasts for 6 years, starting from the age of 6. The purpose of primary education is to cultivate students' national, religious, and moral values, provide training in reading, writing, and arithmetic, and develop oral and written language skills. Primary school includes 11 subjects such as religion, Greek language, history, geography, environment, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and civic education. After graduating from primary school, students are promoted directly to junior high school without examinations.
III. Secondary Education
Secondary education is divided into two stages: junior high school and high school, each lasting 3 years. Compulsory education begins in primary school and continues until the completion of junior high school.
The main task of junior high school is to provide general education. Junior high school includes 16 subjects, including religion, ancient Greek literature, modern Greek, mathematics, geography, physics, chemistry, biology, and anthropology. All three grades of junior high school have technology courses; the third grade has educational and vocational guidance courses; and the first and second grades have home economics courses for female students.
After completing junior high school, students can either enter a 2-year secondary vocational and technical school or take the national unified high school entrance examination to enter a senior high school.
Senior high schools are divided into two types: general senior high schools and vocational and technical senior high schools. General senior high schools have 15 compulsory courses and 5 elective courses. Vocational and technical senior high schools offer both general courses and vocational and technical courses, allowing students to either enter the workforce or continue their studies at higher-level institutions after graduation.
IV. Higher Education
Higher education in Greece is divided into two categories: university education and higher vocational education. Students must pass an entrance examination to enter higher education institutions.
University studies last for 6 years. Greek universities mainly engage in teaching and scientific research, and encourage the application of research results to practice for the benefit of society. The curriculum of each university in Greece varies. If a new degree program is launched, it must be approved by the government to determine whether the government will provide funding. Universities basically adopt a credit system, and the corresponding degree is awarded upon completion of the required credits. University learning combines lectures with self-study, providing a relaxed learning environment that allows students to develop their subjective initiative and expertise.
Higher vocational colleges mainly provide higher vocational and technical education, with a duration generally ranging from 2 to 3 years. In recent years, higher vocational education in Greece has developed into a high-level field of education. The disciplines covered by higher vocational schools include: finance, trade, tourism, sports, computer and communications, business administration, art, etc.
Public higher education in Greece adopts the European education system and uses Greek as the language of instruction. Many British and American universities have established private branches in Greece, including New York University, the University of Sheffield (UK), and others. These schools use English for instruction, allowing students to receive a British or American education at half the tuition cost of the home countries. Students graduating from these Greek branches of American or British universities receive diplomas identical to those from the main campuses, which are recognized by American government agencies and British educational institutions.
Academic qualifications in Greece are internationally recognized. After immigrating to Greece, children of immigrants holding a Greek residence permit can also choose to study in other EU countries or the United States, enjoying the status of EU students (tuition for EU students is generally 50-70% of that for overseas students), and can use their Greek transcripts to apply for better, higher-level institutions worldwide for further studies.
