Swarthmore College, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a typical liberal arts college. Vice President Jim Bock stated, "Swarthmore College offers students a hybrid education that encompasses the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Since the school does not have a graduate program, most students complete their undergraduate studies by the age of 22 and graduate with a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree." Although it is a liberal arts college, the term "liberal arts" does not refer to politics or the arts; rather, it refers to the range of fields of study that students engage in. In their freshman year at Swarthmore, students are required to complete credits in three humanities courses, three social sciences courses, and three natural sciences courses.

Jim Bock also noted that liberal arts colleges typically do not offer technical courses or preparatory programs for fields such as pharmacy. Most liberal arts colleges do not offer engineering courses; however, Swarthmore College has been offering engineering courses since 1880, with the aim of cultivating engineers who are also articulate writers. Jim Bock believes that many students entering college are unsure of their chosen major and lack a clear life plan, while the diverse program offerings at liberal arts colleges can effectively broaden students' perspectives, providing them with a wider educational background as a reference and fostering their critical thinking skills.

According to a previous survey conducted by Swarthmore College regarding its alumni, 90% of alumni are engaged in work related to their field of study, indicating that the educational model provided by liberal arts colleges can effectively address students' employment issues. To meet the demands of the market and international education, many universities have developed distinctive liberal arts programs to attract students from various regions.
