A brief discussion on the life experience of a Portuguese immigrant

I have lived in Portugal as an immigrant for more than twenty years and I like it very much. The natural environment here is very good, with green hills and clear waters; it is not cold in winter and not hot in summer. Except for less sunshine in winter, there is really nothing to complain about regarding the climate. Portuguese people are generally very polite, and you will be treated politely wherever you are. COCO believes that the politeness of the Portuguese is the result of many years of cultural education, and you rarely see the Portuguese speak loudly...

A brief discussion on the life experience of a Portuguese immigrant

Of course, the Portuguese, like people in all countries, have their own arrogance and prejudices, but not just towards foreigners, because Portugal was once a society with strict hierarchy. But in modern society, the Class in Portugal is not about how much money you have or how much power you have, but is reflected in a person's cultivation.

Of course, there is discrimination wherever there are groups of people. Just like discrimination between regions in China, discrimination by people in big cities against people in small cities, and discrimination by urbanites against rural people. In China, even towards their own compatriots, when has there ever been equality? Every time COCO returns home, seeing waiters in restaurants being beckoned here and there, and hearing that whoever has power and money is the boss, my heart is really not used to it. In Portugal, you can be poor, but your personality is equal to others. The difference between a cleaner in a university and a professor is the salary; their status is at least superficially equal. If you do your own job well, you are your own master. In Portugal, no one can point fingers at others in an overbearing manner and scold them, no matter how big your official position is or how much money you have. Even if someone else is at fault and should be punished, there are rules and laws to follow, and they cannot escape, because this is Portugal!

COCO believes that Portuguese society is relatively equal, at least much more equal than current Chinese society. Although prejudice against foreigners certainly exists, especially today when the employment situation in Portugal is grim. But in Portugal, any language involving racial discrimination is illegal. Many well-known figures and politicians have lost their jobs and futures for joking privately about race. If it is public, they will not only lose their jobs but may also face criminal penalties. In fact, in Portugal, no discriminatory language is allowed; you may face serious consequences for it!

Of course, wherever there are groups of people, they have their own circles of life. Generally speaking, the mainstream life culture in Portugal is pub culture. Most social activities, especially social activities of young people, are carried out in pubs and night clubs. In Portugal, if you, especially young people, do not go to pubs and nightclubs with your companions, you have not integrated into the mainstream culture. For the Portuguese, eating is secondary, and drinking is important. So there is no need to be surprised when you see students who are reluctant to eat at noon every day spending money like paper in a pub. Of course, there is much less time to go to bars after getting married, because both time and money have other uses. Another social time is afternoon tea. Don't think that having afternoon tea is an expensive and superior life; it's not. Every unit has afternoon tea, drink a cup of tea, eat some biscuits and chocolate. Three times a day, at ten o'clock in the morning, at noon for lunch, and at three o'clock in the afternoon, it is unshakable.

COCO believes that no matter which country you are in, and whether you are an immigrant or not, if you are self-respecting, self-improving, respect others at the same time, respect other people's cultural habits, do everything by the BOOK, and treat others with kindness, you will be respected by others.
