Mastocytosis is a mast cell proliferative disease of unknown etiology, characterized by histological mast cell infiltrates. This disease occurs in approximately one in 500,000 individuals, is complex and difficult to control, and has yet to see a single cure. Unfortunately, this rare disease has affected Geraint Burns, a baby boy from South Wales, UK.
Geraint's mother, Angharad, stated that Geraint was born with numerous blisters and extensive rashes on his body. Doctors suspected an infection and immediately sent him to the intensive care unit. After dermatological experts performed a skin biopsy on Geraint, they confirmed that he had a mast cell proliferative disease. This was something Angharad never expected, as her pregnancy was flawless, and she paid special attention to balancing work and rest.
Now, Geraint is 18 months old. However, every day he and his mother live in pain and under the curious gazes of others. Due to his condition, Geraint's skin appears as if it has been severely burned. Whenever his mother takes him out, they attract the astonished looks of passersby. Moreover, many people mistakenly believe that this is due to Angharad's inadequate care for him. Additionally, Geraint's skin is particularly fragile, and changes in temperature or gentle friction can cause him to develop large, excruciating blisters.
It is reported that since Geraint was born with this condition, there is a good chance he will spontaneously recover by the age of seven or eight. Angharad also expressed that her greatest dream is to one day hold her son and quietly enjoy the sunshine like other children.
