Guinea-Bissau President Vaz signed a presidential decree on the 20th, appointing former Minister of the Council of Ministers and Parliamentary Affairs, Baciro Djá, as the new Prime Minister, succeeding the previously dismissed Prime Minister Pereira.
Vaz stated in the decree that the candidate for the new Prime Minister was decided after consultations with various political parties in the National Assembly.
However, it remains unknown whether the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), the largest party in the National Assembly, approves of this decision. Both Vaz and Pereira belong to the PAIGC, with Pereira serving as the party's chairman.
On the 12th, Vaz announced the dissolution of the government led by Pereira, sparking protests from the PAIGC, other political parties in the National Assembly, and various sectors of society. The PAIGC has demanded that Vaz reappoint Pereira as the Prime Minister.
Baciro Djá is 39 years old and previously served as the Minister of the Council of Ministers and Parliamentary Affairs in the government led by Pereira, resigning in June this year due to a "lack of trust from the Prime Minister." According to the Constitution of Guinea-Bissau, the Prime Minister should be the chairman of the party that wins the parliamentary elections. If the new Prime Minister appointed by the President cannot pass a vote in the National Assembly, the President must dissolve the National Assembly and organize parliamentary elections within 90 days.
